The new West Kimberley Regional Prison is the first in Australia designed, built and operated to meet the unique cultural needs of Aboriginal people. It holds prisoners of varying security classifications, with separate areas for men and women.

The prison has been designed for 120 male and 30 female prisoners who are accommodated in self-care units.

The accommodation units are grouped houses so that prisoners can be located according to family ties or language, as well as security rating. Units are also self-care, so prisoners can keep or develop life skills such as cooking, cleaning and maintaining their own space.

Some units in the women’s section are able to accommodate a mother and baby.

Purpose-built workshops, education and cultural areas will help prisoners build skills to improve their lives and reduce the likelihood of re-offending.
